GET TO KNOW: xskarma

After an already stellar run of releases these last few years, Bristol-based producer xskarma returns once again with his compelling new single 'Unnatural Selection'.

Bringing back more of that dynamic trip-hop aesthetic he has earned a reputation for, 'Unnatural Selection' makes for a warm and woozy listen from start to finish. Brimming with rich and dynamic textures, a riveting atmosphere, and alluring tones throughout, he continues his ascent as one of the more exciting names doing the rounds right now.

So with the new single available to stream now, we sat down with him to find out more about his background and influences over the years.

What was the first band or artist you fell in love with?

Weather Report

Did you ever form a band when you were younger and if so, what did they sound like?

The first band I was in was called “Leopard Skin Pillbox Hat” it was a kind of psychedelic band.

What has been your primary inspiration in writing music?

I just love to create music. As a drummer I tend to start with a drum groove, and then I build everything from there. So most of my music is groove based.

What is a song you wish you had written yourself?

Massive Attack’s “Unfinished Sympathy”

If there was any moment in your career you could relive, what would it be?

Launching Europe’s first legal music streaming service in 2003 was quite a moment.

Which artist would you most love to share a stage with?

And is there an artist you would love to collaborate with as well?

Lou Rhodes from the band Lamb.

Where do you see yourself in five years time?

Making more music. I have started my own label in the southwest and we want to release more and more local artists on that label. Much of the focus is around the neo-Jazz, triphop and downtempo genres, and what we think is a new Bristol sound. I am also spending more time producing and developing music for other artists, and would love to do more of that."
