GET TO KNOW: VISSIA

Photo: Kane Wilkinson

Following on from the release of her much-loved sophomore album 'With Pleasure' last year, Canadian artist VISSIA has now returned to deliver the vibrant visuals for one of the record's stand out effort 'I Just Wanna Hold U'.

Channelling the tragedy of losing a relationship, 'I Just Wanna Hold U' makes for a powerfully rich and engaging listen. With the video displaying the isolationist emotions that come with a romantic fallout, this new sing perfectly captures the raw and heartfelt feelings so many of us struggle with during these times.

So with the new video out now, we sat down with her to find out more about her background and what has inspired her most over the years.

What was the first band or artist you fell in love with?

The first band I feel in love with was Wilson Phillips when I was… well, definitely younger than 10 years old. Having two sisters, seeing ourselves in a trio of women… they were influential.

Did you ever form a band when you were younger and if so, what did they sound like?

I absolutely had a band when I was growing up. My two younger sisters and I formed a country and western family trio called the Vissia Sisters. We played acoustic guitar, banjo, mandolin, and dobro, but our three-part harmonies were our signature I think. Think Indigo Girls meets The Chicks.

What has been your primary inspiration in writing music?

I’ve been seeking greater self-awareness and my own personal truth since I was a teenager, and songwriting has been part of that from the start. I’m really inspired by relationships and the roles we play, connections I’ve made with other people in my life, and walking in my own shadows. Musically I’m inspired by whatever I’m loving at the time. Lately that’s a lot of RnB, soul, and pop. I want it to groove, I want to move, and for it to be emotional.

What is a song you wish you had written yourself?

Huge question. Ahhh. How do I even answer that? “I Will Always Love You” by Dolly Parton.

If there was any moment in your career you could relive, what would it be?

I feel my career is on the move, so I’m ready to live it out as it comes rather than look back on anything. It’s important to remind myself how far I’ve come, but I keep getting better and stronger at what I do and I wouldn’t want to downgrade to an earlier model for anything.

Which artist would you most love to share a stage with?

Miley Cyrus.

And is there an artist you would love to collaborate with as well?

The Weeknd. I think he’s brilliant.

Where do you see yourself in five years time?

I see myself continuing to create album projects and stretch myself artistically, and I’d love to get into producing for other artists. Collaborations are something I want to be doing a lot more of too.
