After recently returning with her brilliant comeback single 'Sweet Remedy' earlier this year, American-Ukrainian artist Kailaya is back once again with her sweeping new effort 'Montenegro For The Summer'.
Capturing more of that warm and shimmering aesthetic she is known for, 'Montenegro For The Summer' makes for a dazzling return for her. Brimming with these rich and emotive textures at every turn, she is certainly looking to turn some heads with this one.
So with the new track out now, we sat down with her to discuss her origins and influences over the years.
What was the first band or artist you fell in love with?
I can’t say for sure the first but I know the first artists I fell in love with once I started songwriting were Snoh Aalegra and Leon Bridges.
Did you ever form a band when you were younger and if so, what did they sound like?
Ohhhh DID I!!! I was the drummer and …singer? I don’t know man we made it work haha and I was 10 years old. The lead singer was Em Beihold who is a really talented songwriter and singer to this day.
What has been your primary inspiration in writing music?
People, places, experiences, and guitar. And my intense emotions hahaha.
What is a song you wish you had written yourself?
Prone by Masego
Havana by Camilla Cabello
And Mrs. by Leon Bridges
If there was any moment in your career you could relive, what would it be?
A few nights ago, performing at the Troubadour. It was surreal.
Which artist would you most love to share a stage with?
If I could go back in time I’d say Amy Winehouse. Now, I would say Leon, Kehlani, Jorja Smith. Love their stage presence.
And is there an artist you would love to collaborate with as well?
All of the above on top of Masego, Daniel Caesar, Cleo Sol, and Jaz Karis.
Where do you see yourself in five years time?
As long as I am songwriting, dancing, singing, acting, and entertaining, I am happy. Hopefully on stage or in a writing session.
