After establishing himself with a wealth of dazzling delights these last few years, Australian artist Tom Neilson is now looking to cement his legacy to date with his eagerly-awaited debut EP 'This Love I Know'.
Bringing together all five of his previous shared tracks under one roof, 'This Love I Know' makes for a beautifully emotive listen. With his shimmering vocals layered across a sprawling production from start to finish, he is certainly looking to turn plenty of heads with this one.
So with the new EP out now, we sat down with him to find out more about his origins and influences over the years.
What was the first band or artist you fell in love with?
I think the first artists I ever really connected with were Simon and Garfunkel.. the lyrics so beautifully interwoven with their timeless melodies. They remain an inspiration for me to this day
Did you ever form a band when you were younger and if so, what did they sound like?
I was actually in an electronic act called Standby Empire that formed back in 2015. We were inspired by the sounds of James Blake, Chet Faker and The Kite String Tangle and had a good five years together making music and performing. I learned a lot in those years and it was definitely a big part of my journey as a songwriter.
What has been your primary inspiration in writing music?
Writing music has given me an outlet, a way of processing, letting go and healing. It's a grounding and cathartic experience that is completely immersive and allows me to connect with the things that matter most in my life.
What is a song you wish you had written yourself?
I absolutely love Winter Winds by Mumford and Sons. It is raw with emotion, beautifully written and hits me everytime.
If there was any moment in your career you could relive, what would it be?
I've been lucky enough to play alongside some incredible artists over the years including Tash Sultana, Bobby Alu, Amy Shark and Gawurra.. seeing these remarkable artists and performers do what they do is surreal and truly inspiring.
Which artist would you most love to share a stage with?
I'd love to play alongside Tom Odell.. his songwriting and performance is beautiful and emotive.. it's the kind of music I aspire to write.
And is there an artist you would love to collaborate with as well?
That's a hard one.. Ocie Elliott comes to mind and would be incredible to write with.. I love the richness of their sound and the storytelling woven into each song.
Where do you see yourself in five years time?
Continuing to write, create, record... Hopefully I've traveled a little further, learned a little more and have some more stories to tell.
