GET TO KNOW: mithrilblue

Following on from a flurry of bold and dreamy delights these last few months, including his highly-praised studio album 'DOUGHY' last year, Portland-based artist mithrilblue returns once again with his stunning new single 'GET WITH YOU'.

Channelling a wonderfully warm and sweeping psych-pop direction from start to finish, 'GET WITH YOU' makes for a brilliantly endearing listen. With his light and breezy vocals riding a bed of enticing production throughout, he certainly stands as one of the more laid-back names on the rise right now.

So with the new single available now, we sat down with him to find out more about his origins and influences over the years.

What was the first band or artist you fell in love with?

Relient K was not only my favourite band as a kid, but was the first concert I ever went to. Their super fun, yet incredible underrated songwriting is still to this day inspiring for me. When I think about music that helps me rest and restore, it's gotta be Relient K.

Did you ever form a band when you were younger and if so, what did they sound like?

Early in my 20’s I was part of a band called Mortal Minds. We were a rap/rock band that sounded like a cross between Linkin Park and Rage Against the Machine.

What has been your primary inspiration in writing music?

My wife has been my primary inspiration for music and the whole purpose of “mithrilblue” in general. When I started producing and making music by myself when the pandemic began, I exposed a lot of insecurities in my sense of self worth. I so blatantly tried to use everything I was creating as a way to gain validation as an artist from others, which left me depressed and empty. When I finally gave up, God showed me how valuable I already am, and to start making music FROM knowing my worth, instead of trying to use music to gain or prove that worth. That learning process lead me to start making my music for the one person in my life who I feel has already given me all validation and love for who I am, that being my wife, Christina. So from there I literally just started asking what she likes or if she likes this or that, and just made that.

What is a song you wish you had written yourself?

I think probably “Man on the Moon'' by Kid Cudi. That song along with the albums I and II, taught me how impactful a single song can be to someone's heart, mind, sense of self, and honestly their future. As a kid, that song became a place of safety and reassurance to persevere through a severely dark and depressing middle school experience I was in.

If there was any moment in your career you could relive, what would it be?

If I could relive my first ever performance, as a scared little below average rapper, performing with some of my best friends at a small little dive bar packed out with all of my friends and family there just to support us and love on us. It's those moments you are far too nervous and anxious to really enjoy.

Which artist would you most love to share a stage with?

I would love to share a stage with Kid Cudi. As someone that was a huge influence years before I ever got into music, just to be able to contribute to the community of fans and people he’s inspired and touched with his music would be an honour.

And is there an artist you would love to collaborate with as well?

I would love to collab with Jon Bellion. As an artist that inspired me to begin making my own music through his BTS videos, and his live performances, I think I would learn so much but also just really enjoy his company and vibe in the studio.

Where do you see yourself in five years time?

I see myself being able to put all my time and energy into my passion for music and relationships with artists. One thing I’m super passionate about is helping artists develop and execute their vision and learn how to be themselves within their brand. And to one day be able to tour and work with a group of artists really wanting to use their music to impact the world and impact culture for the better is the goal.
