What was the first band or artist you fell in love with?
Donell Jones. His Where I Wanna Be album is one of my favorite albums of all time (side note: I’ve been trying to find the vinyl for years!). When I moved to New York from Dominica in 2000, that was the album that helped me assimilate into American culture. I listened to the album every single day. Where I Wanna Be (the song) was the song that I sang for years whenever someone would ask me to sing.
Did you ever form a band when you were younger and if so, what did they sound like?
I never formed a band. I was the only kid I knew who liked singing while growing up. Everyone else wanted to be a rapper.
What has been your primary inspiration in writing music?
Life. I use songwriting as a journal of sorts. The songs aren’t always based on my life. Maybe a story from a friend, a random thought from the past. The world gives me a lot of inspiration. I actually keep a note of song ideas that I’ll often add to while I’m out.
What is a song you wish you had written yourself?
‘Sunshine’ by Lupe Fiasco. It’s one of my favorite songs of all time. It’s one of my favorite love songs of all time. It’s art. From the opening lyrics – Fresh to def she is, from her steps to her set she is, so death might not let me live, ya dig, fresh uh-huh, yes she is – the song elicits love throughout.
If there was any moment in your career you could relive, what would it be?
Honestly, it would be the process of creating my latest album ‘Best Regards.’ This is the most joy I’ve felt through music. The feeling of years of hard work paying off. I felt like I could see the music as I created it. My sound engineer Cody (CJ Shallow) and I spent so many hours together building these tracks until we were both content.
Which artist would you most love to share a stage with?
Masego. I was just telling some of my best friends that Masego’s concert in New York back in October 2018 is still one of the best concerts I’ve ever been to. I think our music and performance styles would compliment each other very well.
And is there an artist you would love to collaborate with as well?
Lucky Daye is my current favorite artist. Would love to collaborate with him one
day. I love his lyricism and the production behind his beats.
Where do you see yourself in five years time?
Enjoying life. Living a fulfilled life through music and law.
