Having spent the last few years delivering a bold and exciting array of alt-pop gems, Leeds-based artist Jaayns has now returned to unveil her glittering new single 'Real Things'.

Marked as the first official single since signing to independent alternative Northern label No Such Thing Records, 'Real Things' sees her return in stellar form. Jam-packed with warm and vivid textures, soaring atmosphere, and her own powerful voice at the helm, things are definitely looking bright for this young newcomer.

So with the new single available now, we sat down with her to find out more about her background and influences over the years.

What was the first instrument you learned to play?

Very first was a tiny keyboard I had as a kid. I remember learning chopsticks and happy birthday. I started playing the guitar when I was 16.

What was the first album you remember owning?

I had a copy of the Beatles Red and Blue albums that my brother recorded me i used to play them all the time when I was a kid. My mum also bought me an old 8 track player and record player from a jumble sale that came with this carpenters 8 track tape that I used to love and play on repeat. I’ve still got the tape somewhere but no idea where the player went.. wish I still had it though.

Did you ever form a band when you were younger and if so, what did they sound like?

No I wanted to but none of my friends were into music. My brother did though and he used to have band practice in the living room, my mum was always cool like that and didn’t mind us playing music loud until quite late at night.

What is a song you wish you had written yourself?

So many.. I love ‘Waiting Game’ by Banks, or Dan Mangan - Basket is a stunning song but also timeless songs like ‘sitting on the dock of the bay’ or Norwegian Wood by the Beatles.

What has been the most thrilling moment about creating your own music?

When you create something and you know you love it and everything comes together and is working. My favourite times are in the studio when you’re just adding loads of different ideas and you’re in total creative flow. It’s always about those magical creative days for me, best days of my life.

And what about the most frustrating part?

Trying to get your music heard is tough, when there’s so many great songs and artists out there. imposter syndrome/comparing yourself to others is pretty tough and impacts most artists and creatives as were all really analytical and question so much.. and possibly having the vision but not having money to invest in music, videos or promo or performing when you really want to do something but you just can’t.

Which artist would you most love to share a stage with?

Arcade Fire would be pretty awesome, Bjork or Bon Iver or Bonobo..

But I mean someone like Chemical Brothers or Prodigy would be insane to be on the stage with.

Where do you see yourself in five years time?

Hopefully still creating and releasing music and working on bigger and lots of different creative projects.
