GET TO KNOW: Dude Safari

Following on from a string of much-loved singles so far this year, which have seen praise from the likes of BBC Introducing, Amazing Radio, Total Rock and many more, UK-based trio Dude Safari return with their latest blistering cut 'Big Worse'.

Channelling the same bold and euphoric direction of acts like Weezer and Dinosaur Pile-Up, 'Big Worse' sees them return in stellar style. Jam-packed with anthemic riffs, soaring hooks, and a catchy persona throughout, we can't wait to see where their journey takes them.

So with the new single out now, we joined them for a quick chat to find out more about their origins and inspirations over the years.

-

What was the first instrument you learned to play?

Jamie - Guitar really badly, still really badly.

Ben - The guitar. It’s the only instrument I ever truly wanted to play. My parents bought me an Epiphone Les Paul when I was a teenager and I learnt how to play a power chord and that was it.

Fred - My grandmother’s organ

What was the first album you remember owning?

Jamie - I think it was Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory? Or Limp Bizkit - Chocolate Starfish. Whichever one came first.

Ben - Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory. I got it as a present for Christmas and it changed my life.

Fred - “Jesus Freak" by DC Talk

Did you ever form a band when you were younger and if so, what did they sound like?

Jamie - Ha, yeah. I was young, dumb and not ready to be in a band. It sounded like Deftones mixed with Reuben.

Ben - Me and a few of my closest friends formed a band in our teens. It was awful, we played music that at best sounded like a poor man's ACDC tribute band. We eventually named it Superbeer. It didn’t go well...

Fred - My friends and I tried to form a band but couldn’t agree on who would play what instrument and when we did play together it wasn’t very good.

What is a song you wish you had written yourself?

Jamie - In Bloom - Nirvana

Ben - Supersonic - Oasis.

Fred - “11:11" by Dinosaur Pileup

What has been the most thrilling moment about creating your own music?

Jamie - Getting our mixes back from Jake Day. It’s like asking for something for Christmas & actually getting it. Christmas Day.

Ben - There are so many amazing things about creating music, but the best thing is knowing that people are connecting with it and enjoying it.

Fred - Knowing that when you start creating a song, it’s going to sound completely different when it’s finished.

And what about the most frustrating part?

Jamie - Decisions. Like some tracks are still wide open. There's an outro or middle 8 that I’m just not going to rush. “Big Worse” is actually one of the new songs we wrote.

It leapfrogged like five others. Just because it was done.

Ben - There is always something that I want to change about it.

Fred - doing so many takes to get the smallest part right.

Which artist would you most love to share a stage with?

Jamie - I think i speak for all of us when I say Dinosaur Pile-Up or Weezer. Although anyone at the moment.

Where do you see yourself in five years time?

Jamie - I hope people on the scene know who we are. We have a small label behind us & we’re working on our second album.

Maybe talk of a Europe or US support tour. That's the plan.

Ben - Post pandemic. Playing gigs all the time and having the best time of my life. All I want to do is get out there and start showing the world Dude Safari.

Fred - Touring the U.S
