GET TO KNOW: Brown_buddha

Having already established himself with a wealth of shimmering delights these last few years, New York-based artist Brown_buddha is back on the grind once again to deliver his vibrant new single 'big buddha'.

Lifted from his newly-released studio album 'ESE //gift of god//', which is available to stream now, 'big buddha' makes for a dynamic return to form for him. With its broad and progressive aesthetic matching his breezy flow throughout, he continues his ascent as one of the more exciting names on the rise right now.

So with the new track available to stream now, we sat down with them to find out more about his origins and influences over the years.

What was the first band or artist you fell in love with?

The first band I fell in love with was Nirvana. I was a huge rock fan and used to listen to Three Days Grace, Green Day, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and a lot of random punk one-offs. I am still very much into post-2000 punk rock music and will never stop supporting it. The same goes for prog rock! But yeah, Nirvana and “Smells Like Teen Spirit” was my first love. I memorized the riff on the bass and the guitar, so whenever I tune either one, I play the riff to see if my strings are in tune, haha.

Did you ever form a band when you were younger and, if so, what did they sound like?

Yeah, there was a band made up of my guitar class that barely met. We did like one song. The main reason I brought up the idea (which I realize was really shallow) was to get close to my high school crush, but it didn't even work out in the long run. If anyone from that band is reading, shout out to you. Stay rock solid.

What has been your primary inspiration in writing music?

My primary inspiration for writing music has been life. Life inspires me and gives me ideas 99.9 percent of the time. The other 0.1 percent is made up of jokes or witty bars and ideas that flesh out into a song.

What is a song you wish you had written yourself?

“Isabella” by Gregg Krukas. Mostly because I, for the life of me, cannot figure out the notes to a certain riff on it. It’s a really nice, smooth jazz track though—give it a listen.

If there was any moment in your career you could relive, what would it be?

Being in the same building or show as Statik Selektah was mind-boggling for me. I remember going to the show that day and, after I was done with my set, realizing that I was going to go to work and no one was going to know that I had been on the same bill as a hip-hop icon.

Which artist would you most love to share a stage with?

MF DOOM, but knowing his shows, we’d probably be in the green room smoking while our doppelgängers do the work for us. R.I.P. to the legend.

And is there an artist you would love to collaborate with as well?

Yes, AKAI SOLO. He’s been dodging me for the longest, so hopefully me writing this will manifest it into reality.

Where do you see yourself in five years' time?

Five years from now, I’ll be DJing in Ibiza, celebrating the release of my hit album that went triple platinum on the Billboard charts, and enjoying life to the fullest.
