Damini Bhatla bridges South Indian tradition and contemporary R&B on ‘GOLD’

Mumbai singer, songwriter and composer Damini Bhatla explores femininity, identity and transformation on her new album 'GOLD', a wide-ranging project that brings South Indian classical traditions into conversation with contemporary R&B.

Created across two years, the album emerged from a period of self-discovery, with Bhatla drawing inspiration from both women artists and those in her own life. Its themes move through sisterhood, sensuality, heartbreak, intergenerational trauma and power, tied together by the image of gold being melted, reshaped and polished into something valuable but imperfect.

And that breadth is reflected musically. ‘Ramba Urvasi Menaka’ introduces a brighter, more immediate energy, while ‘Seethakaalam’ strips things back into something more intimate and rooted in traditional influences. ‘Ethili Neeye’ pushes the contrasts further, beginning with folk textures before opening into distorted guitars and hard-rock rhythms alongside traditional vocal elements.

Backed by Mass Appeal, 'GOLD' presents Bhatla's South Indian musical identity not as an influence sitting alongside her contemporary sound, but as an integral part of an increasingly distinctive artistic language.
