Washington D.C. based duo Hàn Gắn have unveiled their latest single ‘Monster’s Kingdom’. Rugged guitar riffs wind around the mix, post-punk textures and riotous nature on one side, a more melodic inclination on the other. An angered brooding drive as they lash out against abusers of status and power, their arrangements are atmospheric but gritty, urgent and unapologetic from start to finish. The three and a half minutes include elements of flowing psychedelia, but are grounded in the distortion of the instrumentation and the repeating refrains in the vocals.
The band shares, “We looked around and turned what we saw into sound—not a hopeless world, but a wounded one, aching for healing and demanding consequences for the abuses of powerful men.”
The single arrives as part of a three-track release, featuring ‘Stilyagi’, a revived cut from the band’s first EP, alongside an instrumental dub version of ‘Monster’s Kingdom’. The Hàn Gắn duo is Brian Nicewander and Matthew Eng. Their band name, translated from Vietnamese, is heal, and the pair form their ideas overlooking the Potomac River and U.S. Capitol.
