Junior Wright has shared a new song built around one of his most understated arrangements to date.

“Away” examines the difficult period between understanding that somebody is gone and fully adjusting to the reality of their absence.

Rather than using a dense production, Wright keeps the recording centred on vocals, piano and cello. His performance moves between fuller passages and delicate falsetto, while the instrumentation develops gradually around him.

The composition originally started as a vocal melody. Wright wrote the lyrics around that idea before collaborating with a pianist, who responded to the words when developing the musical accompaniment.

The new release highlights a quieter side of an artist whose wider approach is rooted in stylistic versatility.
