What was the first instrument you learned to play?
I learned how to play piano first as a kid, and then tried my hand at viola. I wasn’t very good at viola so I came back to the piano! Piano is still my favorite instrument, and I would eventually love to learn guitar.
What was the first album you remember owning?
First album I ever owned was definitely from the Spice Girls, I’m a 90’s girl!
Did you ever form a band when you were younger and if so, what did they sound like?
I had a band in college before moving to Los Angeles. We all eventually made our way to Los Angeles from across the country and went on to pursue music in different ways. The style of music we played was much more heavily influenced by Ingrid Michaelson and Florence and the Machine, since they were what I mostly listened to at the time. I would write music with a lot of inspiration from those artists and did all of my writing at the time on the piano. My sound has evolved a lot since learning to produce my own music, but I like to come back to my original style sometimes while I’m writing.
What is a song you wish you had written yourself?
“I Wanna Dance With Somebody”! Hands down, legendary pop.
What has been the most thrilling moment about creating your own music?
When I was in high school, I started writing everyday at the piano when I’d get home from school. Once I started to get the hang of it, I realized that anything I had going on emotionally, I could get out of my head and express through my songs. It felt like a huge weight was lifted. From then on, I was hooked.
And what about the most frustrating?
In music production or writing, the most frustrating thing is when you have a cool idea in your mind and you realize once it’s real, that it doesn’t sound as cool as you thought it would. Or pouring days into a song and realizing it doesn’t match the vibe of what I want to release and scrapping it, that can be pretty frustrating too. But I try not to get down about it and move onto the next!
Which artist would you most love to share a stage with?
Would love to open for an artist like Marina! She’s so inspiring and her live shows are incredible too!
Where do you see yourself in five years time?
My goal is always to keep releasing music, be it in album format or as singles, and to keep expanding my brand. I want to be able to help people feel better with my music. And so, my ultimate goal is for my music to reach as many people as I can, and to hopefully bring them something that makes them feel good when they’re listening! I want to be touring internationally too!
