What was the first instrument you learned to play?
The piano. And I’ve never really bothered to learn anything else since.
What was the first album you remember owning?
It’s not cool at all, but I bought No Angel by Dido at Asda. It is pretty good though.
Did you ever form a band when you were younger and if so, what did they sound like?
Yes, between about 13 and 15. We were called Ka’naitch, which came from ‘K and H’ because everyone in the band had a surname that ended in K or H. I don’t think we ever really figured out what we were supposed to sound like - it was pretty eclectic!
What is a song you wish you had written yourself?
Impregnable Question by Dirty Projectors. It’s so simple and short, but at the same time the tune goes to places you’re not expecting the first time you hear it. It’s beautiful.
What has been the most thrilling moment about creating your own music?
I’ve been working with an orchestra plug-in and that’s really made me feel like there are no limits to the kind of music I can make.
And what about the most frustrating part?
When I have a song written and recorded and I really like it except I don’t have any lyrics, or even any ideas for lyrics, and the song is just in a kind of limbo. That’s happened a lot recently.
Which artist would you most love to share a stage with?
I’m not sure who it would be, but I’d hope it would be at the Grammys or something where they have two artists do a duet who don’t really go together musically and it’s a bit awkward to watch.
Where do you see yourself in five years time?
Honestly, I have no idea. Who could even say what the world will be like in 5 years time. In 2016, would you have imagined 2021 to be like this?
