GET TO KNOW: Sasha Dawe

After introducing himself with his woozy debut single 'Baby Blue' earlier this year, fast-rising singer-songwriter Sasha Dawe is back at it once again on his latest laid-back offering 'Shovelling Hopes And Dreams'.

Channelling more of that sweet and sweeping acoustic-led aesthetic he is quickly building for himself, 'Shovelling Hopes And Dreams' makes for a wonderfully warm and inviting listen. With his rich and illuminating voice layered across a dreamlike production throughout, he is continuing to cement himself as one of the more alluring names doing the rounds right now.

So with the new single available to stream now, we sat down with him to find out more about his origins and influences over the years.

What was the first band or artist you fell in love with?

It’s difficult to say really as there were a bunch of artists I fell in love with when I was too young to remember names. But, technically I think it must have been Gorillaz. I found the Demon Days album in my father’s collection when I was young and became fully addicted to their sound.

Did you ever form a band when you were younger and if so, what did they sound like?

In University we formed a band called The Pillars, a Sunday jam band. Our sound was experimental, lots of electric guitars, effects and loops. A sound similar to The Doors, although probably a lot less polished.

What has been your primary inspiration in writing music?

My primary inspiration comes from the things I experience, events that occur in my life and the realities I become aware of. I then internalize them and try figure out how to place them for myself.

What is a song you wish you had written yourself?

At the moment, A Horse with No Name by America. I have a bit of an obsession with the desert and this song poetically describes the feeling of being out there.

If there was any moment in your career you could relive, what would it be?

Up until now, it would be performing Ganja Babe by Michael Franti for Prince Harry with some of my University buddies.

Which artist would you most love to share a stage with?

Alice Phoebe Lou. She is an amazing performer, songwriter and singer. Would be a dream to share a stage with her.

And is there an artist you would love to collaborate with as well?

Rick Rubin, would love to collaborate with him, I would learn so much about my sound from his input. Otherwise with Kevin Morby, he has an incredible writing style that I really look up to.

Where do you see yourself in five years time?

Having stepped deeper into my purpose, in front of massive crowds playing original music. Owning a hugely successful independent record label which focuses on empowering talented local musicians. Starting a family, owning and having built an epic studio on a farm in the Namib desert, as well as making good progress on becoming a billionaire.
