Having already established themselves with a string of impactful offerings in recent months, New York-based duo SAJA are back on the grind once again with their breezy new single 'Prettier Than Me'.
Adopting more of that innovative afro house-inspired aesthetic they are quickly earning a reputation for, 'Prettier Than Me' makes for an incredibly rich and riveting listen. With its sweeping production set to some stellar vocals throughout, they are certainly looking to get us up and out of seats with this one.
So with the new single available to stream now, we sat down with them to find out more about their origins and inspirations over the years.
What was the first band or artist you fell in love with?
When Gabi and I (Sam) first met in the studio, one of the first things we talked about was our musical inspirations. the first artist we both mentioned as inspiration to both of us individually was Hugel. We both have had an affinity for not only house music but also world sounds and Hugel was one of the first people we looked up to as inspiration for our sound.
Did you ever form a band when you were younger and if so, what did
they sound like?
Before Gabi and I met, I was a rapper and released emo rap under the alias Killrow. My early influences that had influenced the sound of that project were artists such as Juice WRLD, Trippie Redd, and Iann Dior. Being from Chicago, Juice WRLD was at the height of his career, and he influenced the sounds of many artists in Chicago, including me. SAJA is Gabi’s first project but when she was 13, she was a finalist on “The Voice Lithuania” for one of the two seasons she sang on.
What has been your primary inspiration in writing music?
The influences of our sound include artists such as DJ Snake, Hugel and Disclosure as well as Selena Gomez and Madison Beer. Pop and House music are our biggest inspirations but we also take inspiration from other genres that further distinguish our style as our own. There are also not many DJ and singer duos out there. We have always looked to artists such as Sofi Tukker and Major Lazer as musical inspiration in their performances.
What is a song you wish you had written yourself?
Where Are U Now by Jack U and Justin Bieber. This song encapsulates the merging of Dance music and pop with production from Diplo and Skrillex and singing by Justin Bieber. We aim to push the boundaries of mainstream pop music in the same way as this record.
If there was any moment in your career you could relive, what would it be?
If there was one moment we could relive so far it would be the excitement of our debut set as a duo performing at “Boiler Room” in Michigan.
Which artist would you most love to share a stage with?
There are many artists we want to perform with during our career such as Swedish House Mafia, Hugel, Skrillex, Chris Lorenzo, Diplo but if we had to choose one, it would probably be Dj Snake.
And is there an artist you would love to collaborate with as well?
As a DJ and Singer duo, we hope to share the stage with many of the same artists we collaborate with. Both DJs and singers. If we had to choose one of each, it would have to be Dj Snake and J Balvin.
Where do you see yourself in five years time?
In 5 years, we hope to be an established act in the club scene, touring Europe, the US, and the world with our sound that connects House music with mainstream Pop.
