After introducing himself with his stunning debut single 'Aligned' last year, London-based artist Matthew Alexander recently returned to deliver his shimmering debut EP 'Meraki', featuring the dazzling new track 'Overboard'.
Much like what his initial offering showcased, 'Overboard' is a wonderfully rich and sweeping slice of R&B gold. With his fresh and immersive vocal style layered amongst a sultry production throughout, he is quickly cementing himself as one of the more exciting names emerging from the capital right now.
So with the new single available to stream now, we sat down with him to find out more about his background and influences over the years.
What was the first band or artist you fell in love with?
That’s easy, 702, straight out the school gates and used my lunch money to buy their single ‘Steelo’ on CD. I was also in love with Total, TLC and Destiny’s Child.
Did you ever form a band when you were younger and if so, what did they sound like?
I did form a live band while studying at the British Academy of New Music, which was super cool for performing. We were soulful, a little funky, threw a bit of jazz influence in there as well, live R&B. I was blessed to work with some really talented musicians.
I’ve never been in a vocal group though. I've always thought how cool it would be to be in a band like that. Writing together, harmonising and just finding a dope band dynamic.
What has been your primary inspiration in writing music?
My parents for sure. They were both in bands with their siblings. I come from a family of musicians. I would hear their records growing up. My family’s early music inspiration and my love for poetry, literature and word play, I’d say is what primarily inspired me to write music. I learnt that I love poetry at about 11 years old.
A well written song or piece of music is just so impressive and satisfying to me. I’ve been a fan of art from an early age.
What is a song you wish you had written yourself?
My All by Maria Carey.
If there was any moment in your career you could relive, what would it be?
Hands down when I met and sung to Kelly Rowland. I would do that again, again and again. Kelly came to do a question and answer session at Hackney Community College in East London back in 2003. My stage name was ‘Mista’ at the time. I was a teenage fan on stage singing to the Ms Kelly Rowland. Mad, to this day, I still think this is mad.
Which artist would you most love to share a stage with?
There’s a few but RAYE blew me away at the Brit Awards this year. Her performance was iconic. I’d love to share the stage with RAYE. Well deserved Brit wins.
And is there an artist you would love to collaborate with as well?
Beyonce, I think Beyonce would be a dream collaboration for most of us Pop and R&B singers.
Where do you see yourself in five years time?
In 5 years time I see myself in an established place within my music career. creating music, working with world class acts and in a position to develop artists. Ultimately I want to sell records and stand alongside the greats that create the soundtracks to our lives.
