GET TO KNOW: Matt Larabie

Writer: The Real DingThe Real Ding

After spending the last few months building and developing his sound, Canadian singer-songwriter Matt Larabie has now introduced himself to the world with his wistful debut single 'The Illusion'.

Channelling a warm and sweeping direction from start to finish, 'The Illusion' makes for a wonderfully smooth and enticing introduction. Filled with laid-back cues, subtle grooves, and his own uplifting vocals layered throughout, we can't wait to hear what he comes up with next.

So with the new single doing the rounds, we sat down with him to find out more about his background and what has inspired him most over the years.

What was the first instrument you learned to play?

Kazoo

What was the first album you remember owning?

Blink-182 - Take Off Your Pants and Jacket

Did you ever form a band when you were younger and if so, what did they sound like?

Formed a hardcore/screamo band when I was early in high school. We sounded like...well, let’s forget about it, lol. We were into Silverstein, Chiodos and Bayside to name a few.

What is a song you wish you had written yourself?

Nancy From Now On by Father John Misty. It’s opening lines took me by surprise. Seriously, it comes out of nowhere. Highly recommend this song. I just heard it a few months ago for the first time and thought, “Damn, I wanna write like that”. Just write something that would shock a new listener into, well... listening. Nothing like a great story for me!

What has been the most thrilling moment about creating your own music?

Being present when ideas a forming. When I’m no longer thinking too hard and allowing things to happen. I love making little decisions to go to the next idea and see what the song and my mind are trying to say. Then colouring that up with chord changes and possible layers. Hearing potential parts and basically feeling inspiration. Witnessing something form out of nothing, and when it sounds good and honest simultaneously, it’s even better!

And what about the most frustrating part?

Marketing. Feeling exposed and knowing that it’s a long road and quite financially uncertain. Also, bouncing levels out of my version of Pro tools (the DAW audio mixing program I use). There’s something my computer and Pro Tools aren’t wanting to talk about lol...still figuring that one out.

Which artist would you most love to share a stage with?

Eric D. Johnson of Fruit Bats. He’s another artist I’ve recently really gotten into. He’s such a great songwriter. I would love to perform with him. Andy Shauf can come too!

Where do you see yourself in five years time?

Great question! I envision a life of writing and releasing albums. Hope to be playing locally and have enough to do this full-time. We’ll see!
