After cementing himself with a wealth of fresh and upbeat offerings these last few years, Minnesota-based rapper J Dynamic returns once again with his vibrant new single 'The Dream'.
Capturing more of that warm and textured hip-hop aesthetic he is known for, 'The Dream' makes for a wonderfully refreshing listen. With his bold and progressive flow running the length of this driven new gem, he is continuing his rise as one of the more entrancing names on the scene right now.
So with the new single doing the rounds, we sat down with him to find out more about his origins and influences over the years.
What was the first band or artist you fell in love with?
The first band I fell in love with was probably Green Day. “Dookie” was the first album I got and would listen to it on repeat.
Did you ever form a band when you were younger and if so, what did they
sound like?
lol yes I was in a band for the 5th-grade talent show. Our name was Stalefish (Like the trick in snowboarding) We were horrible, I played lead guitar and didn’t know any chords or anything. I just played the same progression for 3 min straight, it was pretty bad haha. I wish I would have kept the guitar. I would be way better at it now but here I am picking it up 20-some years later. Never too late right?
What has been your primary inspiration in writing music?
Great music inspires me to make music. I'll hear something in a song like a line or a cadence or part of the beat and it will get my creative juices flowing. Driving in the car oddly enough inspires me to create. I have a little handheld voice recorder that I keep in my cup holder that I can grab whenever creativity strikes!
What is a song you wish you had written yourself?
“Sunday Best” by Surfaces it literally embodies how I live my life. When I heard it I was like how did these guys hack my brain like that? It's very similar to my song “Bahamas” Like many other people I’ve been a Surfaces fan ever since.
If there was any moment in your career you could relive, what would it be?
A moment I actually just lived which was opening for Paul Wall at the Cabooze in Minneapolis, MN. The energy was electric and the sound was amazing. The crowd was rockin' with us crazy, singing along with us and super involved, at the end of the day that’s what I do this for, connecting with people and making them feel the same high I feel on stage. That's where the real magic happens and it was flowing that night!
Which artist would you most love to share a stage with?
Chance The Rapper or Denzel Curry. The stage presence and energy we would share would be absolutely electric!
And is there an artist you would love to collaborate with as well?
Other than the two mentioned in the last question I would say Kanye West or Pharrell Williams and have them produce the track as well! Just being in the studio with them would be such an experience, true masters of the craft! Kid Cudi is also really high on my list!
Where do you see yourself in five years time?
In five years I see myself still doing what I love, collaborating with artists that I love, continuing to put out meaningful uplifting music that moves the soul and connecting with fans across the globe by touring the world!!!
