After nearly two decades of honing her voice and vision, Dublin-based singer-songwriter Megan Burke returns with 'Medium Ugly', a no-holds-barred anthem that takes aim at the beige mediocrity of modern dating. Bold, slick, and dripping in sarcasm, the track finds Megan turning personal frustration into empowerment, refusing to hand over her power to any man in a “different font.”
Known for blending R&B, disco-pop, and soul with fierce lyrical honesty, Megan has cultivated a loyal following online and off, racking up millions of views, national TV spots, and major Irish radio play, all while remaining fiercely independent. Her latest offering, created alongside all-female production powerhouse Jessica Foxx Richardson, proves once again that Megan knows how to transform life’s messiest moments into sonic gold.
So we caught up with her to find out more about her origins and influences over the years.
What was the first band or artist you fell in love with?
Christina was the first singer to make my jaw drop, I remember watching her Genie in a bottle video for the first time and thinking’ oh shit, I need to be here’ so I spent the next few years of my life trying to be a 12-year-old Dublin version of Christina Aguilera , thankfully without the assless chaps!!
Did you ever form a band when you were younger and if so, what did they sound like?
When I was younger, the girls and I would transform into a Spice Girls tribute act pretty much every day after school. We never had our own sound, we exclusively said Spice Girls songs for all the neighbours on the road. We would always fight for Baby spice but I was obviously a sporty spice, I just wasn’t ready to admit it.
What has been your primary inspiration in writing music?
My primary inspiration for writing music has to be self expression, I’m able to get out all of my emotions and tell the stories of my life in an open and honest way.
What is a song you wish you had written yourself?
Fallin by Alicia keys , it’s a song that has had such an influence on me and a song I always go back to and I genuinely think it’s one of the best songs ever written.
If there was any moment in your career you could relive, what would it be?
Probably singing in the 3 Arena Dublin. It was for a TV show so a little bit different obviously to a concert but I don’t think I truly took in the experience, but hopefully I’ll get to do that again soon
Which artist would you most love to share a stage with?
Well, I think I would love to perform with Amy Winehouse, but that would be a bit weird lol no I’m just joking but if I could bring anyone back from the past, it would be Amy Winehouse. If we’re talking about someone that might actually be a possibility, I think I’d go for CMAT, I think we’d have a right laugh.
And is there an artist you would love to collaborate with as well?
I’d love to collab with kneecap but I can’t imagine they are in the market for a soul singer who sings about how shit men are lol.
Where do you see yourself in five years time?
Hopefully alive haha ( although ask me that question on a bad day and I don’t know if I’d say the same) I’d like to see myself touring and singing songs that I adore and I’m proud of and that people like.
