GET TO KNOW: Hunter Heflin

After establishing himself with a bold and exciting array of releases throughout the last few months, California-based artist Hunter Heflin returns once again with his sultry new single 'Coincide'.

Lifted from his forthcoming EP 'It's Good To See You, Too', which is set to arrive soon, 'Coincide' makes for a brilliantly infectious listen. Channelling a bold and driven aesthetic, euphoric atmosphere, and his own driven vocal style at the helm, he is continuing his pursuit of warm and vibrant textures throughout this release.

So with the new single available now, we sat down with him to find out more about his origins and influences over the years.

What was the first band or artist you fell in love with?

Eminem/D12. I specifically remember singing and rapping “My Band” with a friend in 2nd grade over and over again. We were obsessed with that song.

Did you ever form a band when you were younger and if so, what did they sound like?

I was never in a band per se - I was more on the production side. I tried to make beats that sounded like Scott Storch because he was my favorite producer growing up. I did have a high school group that got together to play coffee shop gigs called Green Onions. We played stuff like “Superstition” by Stevie Wonder and “Skyfall” by Adele.

What has been your primary inspiration for music?

My inspiration comes from all over. Lots of times I’ll have ideas right before I fall asleep, so my phone is full of tired voice memos and different shreds of song ideas that I piece together the next day. Other times, it can be from conversations I’ve had or overheard, Instagram captions, or a particular chord progression. Recently I was co-writing with a friend and I picked a book off a shelf, opened it up, and based a song around the first word I read…it was “liquid”, as random as you’d expect.

What is a song you wish you had written yourself?

Recently, a song called “BLENDER” by 5 Seconds of Summer caught my ear. It’s such a creative take on a toxic relationship, and that song's imagery is insane. It’s airtight and perfectly captures that emotion in a captivating way.

If there was any moment in your career you could relive, what would it be?

Man. So far, one of the best moments of my career was when I finished mastering my EP. To channel so much focus, time, and energy into a big project and have it come out exactly how it sounded in your head has to be one of the best feelings I’ve ever had.

Which artist would you most love to share a stage with?

Drake. The way he connects with the crowd is like nothing I’ve seen before. Sometimes I watch his performances on YouTube to see how he manages the energy and keeps the momentum going through a two-hour set.

And is there an artist you would love to collaborate with as well?

I usually would say Drake here too, but recently I’ve been wondering what it would sound like if I had a track with Ella Mai. I think we would really do damage on a song or even an EP. I love her songwriting, toplining, and the fresh perspective she infuses into her work.

Where do you see yourself in five years' time?

On top of the Billboard Chart! I have to start manifesting this more. If I had to sum up my goals in music in one sentence, that would be it. For now, I’m just enjoying the journey there.
