After establishing himself with a wealth of rich and dynamic offerings these last few years, LA-based rapper GILLIA returns to the fold once again to offer up his mesmerising new delight 'Familiar'.
Continuing to explore more of that fresh and enigmatic aesthetic he his known for, 'Familiar' makes for a brilliantly progressive listen. With his warm and inviting flow measured against some riveting production throughout, he is cementing himself as one of the more alluring names on the rise right now.
So with the new single available now, we sat down with him to find out more about his background and what has inspired him most over the years.
What/who was the first band or artist you fell in love with?
Funnily enough it was Lupe Fiasco. I was big into lyricism and more traditional rap as a kid and Lupe’s imagery and wordplay had a hold on me. ‘The Cool’ was my first ringtone.
Did you ever form a band when you were younger and if so, what did they sound like?
Never formed a band. I honestly didn’t start making music until I was 21 and a year from graduating college. I got a late start.
What has been your primary inspiration in writing music?
Life relationships as well as the trials and tribulations of finding oneself. 99% it’s one or the other or a mix of those two.
What is a song you wish you had written yourself?
‘Jus Know’ by PARTYNEXTDOOR. I feel like the song is written from my point of view with how much I relate to the lyrics.
If there was any moment in your career you could relive, what would it be?
With how early I am in my growth, I presume those moments will be coming soon! So far it’s just been a grind, but I love the creation process so it is what it is.
Which artist would you most love to share a stage with?
PARTYNEXTDOOR is my favorite artist, so it would have to be him.
And is there an artist you would love to collaborate with as well?
Roy Woods and I have a similar vocal inflection and I’ve always admired his work. Would be great to collaborate with him.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
In a cycle of creating, performing, and making a good living doing what I love. Fingers crossed!
