Having already made his mark with a string of impactful offerings these last few months, fast-rising artist Aaron Koenig is back on the grind once again with his wondrous new single 'Death'.
Adopting more of that broad and innovative aesthetic he has been crafting lately, 'Death' makes for a brilliantly distinctive listen. With its airy atmosphere and shimmering textures throughout, he is certainly looking to turn some heads with this one.
So with the new single available to stream now, we sat down with him to find out more about his origins and influences over the years.
What was the first band or artist you fell in love with?
I remember recording ‘Rebel, Rebel’ by David Bowie from the radio when I was nine years old and I listened to it all the time. It’s still my favourite Karaoke song. I have been a Bowie fan ever since. I even met him in real life at the launch party of VH-1 Germany. He sent us an audio greeting for the website we built for VH-1 back in 1995. Nobody believed me he would do that, but he was a true visionary and saw the potential of the Internet at that early stage.
Did you ever form a band when you were younger and if so, what did they sound like?
I was fifteen when I started my first band, it was a punk rock band with German lyrics. When I was seventeen my second band Fähnlein Fieselschweif released two singles and played in sold out venues in Hamburg.
What has been your primary inspiration in writing music?
I want to have a positive impact on people’s lives, and music can be a very good way for that.
What is a song you wish you had written yourself?
‘Samba de uma nota só’ by Antônio Carlos Jobim. I love how music and lyrics go together in that song.
If there was any moment in your career you could relive, what would it be?
I have no regrets.
Which artist would you most love to share a stage with?
I would have loved to play with the Beatles when they were unknown and played in seedy clubs in my hometown Hamburg in the early sixties.
And is there an artist you would love to collaborate with as well?
Cateano Veloso. He is one of my all time favourites. He has a very unique way of writing lyrics, there is even a word for it in Portuguese: caetanear.
Where do you see yourself in five years time?
I don’t plan so far ahead.
