Riverie steps into the shadows with ‘The Ugly and The Beautiful’

Canadian artist Caroline Fernandez unveils an absorbing new musical identity with Riverie, introducing the project through haunting debut single ‘The Ugly and The Beautiful’.

Opening the forthcoming four-track EP 'Faded Empire', the single sees her leave behind the worlds of Rivers Below Rivers and house project Paper Kid for something darker and more atmospheric. Drawing inspiration from FKA Twigs, LAMB and Portishead, Riverie immerses delicate songwriting in the shadowy textures of trip-hop.

Soft vocals and luminous keys initially give ‘The Ugly and The Beautiful’ an almost weightless quality, before drum machines and a darker chorus begin disturbing the tranquillity underneath.

Written between the UAE and Goa, the track was brought to LAMB's Andy Barlow, who produced it at his Goa studio. Its uneasy atmosphere mirrors her lyrical exploration of identity, powerlessness and the disorientating experience of watching both yourself and the world around you change.
