Mali turns the pressure of always being somebody's hero into pure pop gold on ‘Saviour Complex’, an irresistibly bright new single accompanied by a playful new video.
Inspired by personal experiences of wanting to escape the role of the rescuer, ‘Saviour Complex’ finds the Mumbai singer-songwriter firing on every cylinder. Grooving synth-bass, sparkling melodies and glorious ad-libs provide the foundation, while Mali's effortlessly charismatic vocals turn its complicated emotional premise into an immediate pop earworm.
Its colourful visual matches that energy perfectly, bringing a youthful sense of fun to a song that provides another tantalising glimpse of forthcoming album Where Was I?
Written after Mali returned to Mumbai in 2022, the record explores identity, belonging and those periods of life whose importance only becomes apparent afterwards. Created alongside collaborator Keshav Dhar, it represents a significant new chapter in her songwriting.
