North Yorkshire songwriter Jack Simpson returns at the start of 2026, sharing his single, ‘Babies are Boring’, offering up a playful alternative power-pop track that is a highlight from his EP, Jack Simpson is looking up at the Trees.

Out now, the track leans into the tongue-in-cheek humour of Jack’s writing, with a folk inflection drawn from his storyteller’s seat at the microphone. Bright guitar lines, deliberately infectious repetition, and an overall lighthearted exploration of the themes, pairing earworm melodies with wry narratives.

Simpson shares, “I was keen to explore the feelings of the older child when their mother had had another baby. Feelings of alienation and bewilderment are explored. However, tongue in cheek, instead of going up Thunder Road, the subject goes round on their bike in their garden. They then have no one to talk to and so discuss the situation with pet hens. The tune is deliberately repetitious and catchy, and indeed, children appear to love it even though it has been written for adults.”

A self-described songwriter first and foremost, Simpson has released music across the course of two decades, inspired by nature, everyday observation and St Francis, largely avoiding the live spotlight along the way. Navigating brass-flecked anthems and steady melodies, Simpson’s evolving artistry is in a nostalgic, rock-tinted outlook.
