Having already found huge success with a string of wondrous releases on their YouTube channel in recent years, Kent's The Marsh Family recently saw out 2023 with their emotive new single 'If That Day Comes Round'.
Capturing a wonderfully bright and euphoric energy, 'If That Day Comes Round' comes layered with a powerful message about hope in the face of adversity. With its thought-provoking lyrics and imagery surrounding the Israel-Palestine conflict, this new offering certainly makes for an impactful listen throughout.
So with the new track doing the rounds right now, we sat down with them to find out more about their origins and influences over the years.
What was the first band or artist you fell in love with?
As Watford fans, we would have to say Elton John. His early stuff was so different and amazing, and had huge range and depth. Couldn’t always understand the vocals, but that was part of the charm! Our favourite later album was Too Low For Zero, and it was great to watch him finally doing Glasto last year.
Did you ever form a band when you were younger and if so, what did they sound like?
Ben was in a band at school in the late 80s and learned how to write songs with one of his best friends (who’s now a GP), and always had a laugh doing it. That mix of having fun and being excited to find new melodies and chord sequences has never left, and now the boys are doing the same – mostly doing funk/rock stuff in school bands, besides what we create at home. Danielle was in a cover band in Newcastle called “Famous Last Words” belting out 80s hits with her Dad on the drums.
What has been your primary inspiration in writing music?
We’ve had a lot of fun with the parody stuff, and poking fun at topics, but our inspiration for original music runs a bit deeper – we’re wanting to catch this moment in our family which might not last forever, and mark things that are important to us. Our music is a kind of record of our development, and of our bond together, but one that we can share with other people, which is special. We write each song thinking this might be the last one, which brings a real energy and momentum.
What is a song you wish you had written yourself?
The Weight by The Band.
If there was any moment in your career you could relive, what would it be?
Probably the Comic Relief live show appearance. It was all a blur of nerves and excitement, and it was so surreal to watch it back on TV that night knowing it had gone well.
Which artists would you most love to share a stage with?
We love the energy and affability of Sam Ryder, and the joy he’s bringing. We also really dig a Scottish band called High Fade whose musicianship and groove is amazing.
Where do you see yourself in five years time?
In five years we will be in our absolute prime. The parents will be in last chance saloon before their bodies and minds decline, and they retreat to blankets and hot chocolates. And all the kids will be seventeen or above, so able in theory to get married, drive, drink, and stay up late. So we’re not taking anything for granted and we are just trying to crack on and make music together while we enjoy it, and while other people are happy to share in it. If we had one long-range ambition, it’s to apply to be in the Eurovision Song Contest, since nobody has any chance from the UK, so there’s no pressure, and we’ve always LOVED it and had a massive family night with a sweepstake. But we have to wait till Tess is 16 for that.
