Known for his broad and emotive approach in recent years, emerging artist SeanJ now makes his eagerly-awaited return to deliver the heartfelt new single 'Brave'.
Released as part of RADA’s ‘Unearthed Volume Three’ album, 'Brave' makes for an incredibly impactful listen from start to finish. With his shimmering vocal style layered across a tender pop-rock production throughout, he is certainly looking to pull on our heartstrings with this one.
So with the new track out now, we sat down with him to find out more about his origins and influences over the years.
What was the first band or artist you fell in love with?
Elton John. As a kid I was obsessed with The Lion King and I remember listening to Elton’s Love Songs compilation album on repeat because it had ‘Can You Feel The Love Tonight’ on there. That was also the song I sang and won my first singing competition as a youngster.
Did you ever form a band when you were younger and if so, what did they sound like?
I started in the entertainment industry as a ‘theatre kid’. At the age of 11, I toured in my first professional production with the legendary Randall Wicomb. This led to other opportunities within the music industry. During my years as a university student, I was part of several cover bands performing at corporate events and festivals. I must say, we did not sound too shabby.
What has been your primary inspiration in writing music?
People – I am always inspired by people’s stories. As a radio host, I am privileged to engage with people from all walks of life on a daily basis. Their stories always seem to find a way into my songwriting process.
What is a song you wish you had written yourself?
‘Speak’ by Lloyiso. I am a sucker for a good ballad. The emotion in this song is so raw and real and Lloyiso’s voice is absolutely captivating.
If there was any moment in your career you could relive, what would it be?
2011 – Performing at the 7th Annual World AIDS Day Gala Concert at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. Being on one stage with South African legends such as the Grammy award-winning Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Vicky Sampson was an absolute dream come true. Apart from that, as an artist I’ve always strived towards using my craft as a means to bring positive change. Being part of such an incredible initiative to raise awareness about the AIDS epidemic was very rewarding.
Which artist would you most love to share a stage with?
Chris Martin/Coldplay. I have always been a fan of the group and Chris Martin’s songwriting. Chris has been part of a number of humanitarian causes through his music and that is what I strive to do as an artist.
And is there an artist you would love to collaborate with as well?
I would love to collaborate with Jimmy Nevis. I think he is an incredible songwriter and and an equally good performer.
Where do you see yourself in five years time?
Becoming a media and entertainment mogul who utilizes his talents, skills, and resources to contribute to philanthropic deeds and do my part to make this world a better place.
