GET TO KNOW: Catlea

Writer's picture: The Real DingThe Real Ding

After spending the last few years developing a broad and immersive direction for themselves, Cincinnati-based artist Catlea recently returned once again to deliver the breezy new offering 'Like Me'.

Lifted from their eagerly-awaited debut album 'Language Barrier', which is set to arrive soon, 'Like Me' makes for an incredibly warm and tender listen throughout. Exploring more of that riveting alt-pop aesthetic they have built for themselves, this new offering continues their ascent as one of the more exciting names on the rise right now.

So with the new single available to stream now, we sat down with them to find out more about their origins and influences over the years.

What was the first band or artist you fell in love with?

Pink Floyd, hands down. My dad used to make playlists of all the songs that he loved so I’d get caught up on all the good stuff from before I was born, and Pink Floyd was on almost every one of those CDs. Wish You Were Here is still my favorite song to this day, especially since it’s the first song my brother ever taught me how to play on the guitar.

Did you ever form a band when you were younger and if so, what did they sound like?

Never a band, but growing up my best friend and I used to write music together. I don’t remember how any of the songs sounded, but we definitely thought we’d written the next big pop hits and that we’d win one of those TV talent shows and move to LA together one day. Big dreams for a couple of 10-year-olds!

What has been your primary inspiration in writing music?

I’m inspired by the endless possibilities and the endless ways to express yourself more than you can with just words alone. Music helps me to share my thoughts, feelings, and experiences in a unique way that I find completely magical.

What is a song you wish you had written yourself?

Slow Motion by Kalandra, or pretty much anything PVRIS has ever released.

If there was any moment in your career you could relive, what would it be?

I spent two weeks in Barcelona practicing my live show with my music team — my found family — at Room To Studio around this time last year. Every day flew by in what felt like seconds, but I’ll never forget the final night of our two-week-long nonstop grind after we finally played the show live for the first time. I was confiding in someone — a Drench documentarian I’d befriended — that I wasn’t ready to leave. He looked me in the eyes and said “You know you’re going to move here one day, right? You have that look in your eyes. The look we all get.” And gestured around the room to all the people who had moved there from all over the world, some from even farther away than me. I told him I knew. I’d relive that night — the whole two weeks, honestly — in a heartbeat if I could.

Which artist would you most love to share a stage with?

There are so many! But if I had to pick just one, Twenty One Pilots. They’re truly amazing to see live.

And is there an artist you would love to collaborate with as well?

PVRIS, Bring Me the Horizon, Mothica, Kalandra, Half•Alive, the list is endless but those are the big ones!

Where do you see yourself in five years time?

Living in Barcelona, performing all over the world, learning, growing, and living my dream each day.
