Farnham trio Bacchanal have released a new single, ‘To Do Lust’, exploring further darker and emotionally charged material with their rising alt-rock style. The outfit, for this track, centres on the collapse of an affair, striking a balance between the uneasy material and a tight, punchy, heavy sonic space that you want to keep returning to. The guitars are roaring, consistently layered with more distorted fervour.
The muscularity of the rhythm section super-charges these ripping riffs and the gritty vocals with intensity at every turn. It all builds to a reflective outro, which shows off their instrumental chops after a riotous first two-thirds.
They share, “The song captures the slow unravelling of an affair, with the protagonist accepting that while there will always be an undercurrent of lust between them, walking away is ultimately the healthiest choice for both. There’s a tension between desire and closure that runs throughout the lyrics.
The opening lines of verses one and two are delivered to resemble a telephone conversation, creating an intimate, almost voyeuristic feel, as if we’re overhearing a private exchange. The track was recorded in Woking in December, during a period where the colder atmosphere mirrored the emotional tone of the song.
Longman, Jefferson and Morris are the trio who self-describe as ‘tolerating each other’ to make music. The result is a combination of grunge, indie and prog rock.
