If wit were wattage, Tom Minor could power London for a week. And with his newest collection 'Ten New Toe-Tappers for Shoplifting & Self-Mutilation', the N1 songwriter delivers a sophomore record that crackles with brainy mischief, melodic swagger and the kind of lyrical audacity that makes you laugh before you realise you’ve just been emotionally body-checked.
From the jump, this album feels alive with restless guitars, punchy rhythms, choruses that practically dare you not to sing along. The artist has always had a knack for marrying sharp observation with irresistible hooks, but here he sounds even more locked in.
'Future Is an F Word' kicks things off in riotous fashion, delivering a punchy, chant-ready opener that balances romantic collapse and planetary dread with wicked charm. It’s the sort of song that feels built for crowded rooms and knowing grins. 'Expanding Universe' follows with a strut, tossing off cultural critique with glam-inflected confidence and a rhythm section that refuses to sit still.
Then there’s 'Progressive or Punk', a standout that barrels forward on clever wordplay and scene-soaked nostalgia. It’s affectionate, biting and utterly infectious, all in under four minutes.
Flip to the latter half and the characters get even more vivid. 'Washed-Up Buoy' is brilliantly self-aware, bobbing between defiance and doubt with harmonica stabs that feel like sea spray in your face. 'The Manic Phase' is theatrical and kinetic, unveiling a whirlwind portrait delivered with breathless energy. And 'The Loneliest Person on Earth' reveals the soft underbelly beneath all the bravado as he explores something aching, melodic and surprisingly tender.
Producer Teaboy Palmer keeps everything punchy and propulsive, letting the guitars sparkle and the hooks land hard without sacrificing grit.
This is sharp, sweaty, literate rock ‘n’ roll that demands your attention, and rewards it. Tom Minor isn't just raising the bar here, he's vaulting over it with a grin slapped on his face.
