Since his debut in 2018, Sugs (pronounced “sh-ugs”) has become one of underground music’s most delightfully unpredictable forces. Known for his sharp wit, erratic flow, and lo-fi maximalism, he’s carved out a weird and wonderful niche that defies easy labels. His music might draw from alternative rap, punk, techno, or pop, but no genre ever sticks for long, because nothing Sugs creates ever stands still.

His latest track 'I Ain't Lyin'!' sets the stage for something bigger: an evolving project loosely inspired by the story of Pinocchio, told with synths, distortion, and emotional weight. It’s a world Sugs is still building, brick by brick from his bedroom studio. Collaborating with producer hrcnszn and adding his own layers, he continues to shape a sound that’s unmistakably his: unpolished but intentional, abrasive yet honest, absurd but deeply human.

So with the new single out now, we sat down with Sugs to find out more about the origins and influences behind his sound.

What was the first band or artist you fell in love with?

Kid Cudi was one of the first artists whose work really resonated with me.

Did you ever form a band when you were younger and if so, what did they sound like?

Never, but I used to make songs on Garageband. Mostly instrumental loops.

What has been your primary inspiration in writing music?

My lyrics come from whatever feeling is most overwhelming at the moment. Regret, anger, confidence, love. Exaggerated versions of the feelings.

What is a song you wish you had written yourself?

Autonomy - Boy Harsher, LUCY

If there was any moment in your career you could relive, what would it be?

My first live show. There were so many friends who showed up to support me, truly unexpected. Can’t take that for granted.

Which artist would you most love to share a stage with?

Crazy Frog.

And is there an artist you would love to collaborate with as well?

Always. Won’t get ahead of myself though.

Where do you see yourself in five years time?

Hopefully wiser and in (good) health.
