Pure Speculator approaches electronic music as more than a collection of beats and textures. The Los Angeles-based producer uses sound as a way to explore ideas, drawing on a unique background that spans military service, academic research, and a fascination with human perception to create immersive compositions that encourage reflection as much as movement. His latest single 'Fog Rap Melancholy' offers another step towards his forthcoming debut album 'ProtoBrain I', inviting listeners into a calm, contemplative space where thoughts are free to drift without destination.
Built around fluid electronic production and understated trance influences, the track captures a feeling of mental weightlessness rather than escapism, embracing stillness as a creative force. It reflects the wider philosophy behind 'ProtoBrain I', a record shaped by themes of adaptation, possibility, and personal transformation through carefully crafted sonic environments.
So with the new single out now, we sat down with him to find out more about his origins and influences over the years.
What was the first band or artist you fell in love with?
Owl City
Did you ever form a band when you were younger and if so, what did they sound like?
I didn't form a band, but I did sing in the choir regularly.
What has been your primary inspiration in writing music?
I felt alone and abandoned by the world, I needed to find a way to express the ideas in my head that I couldn't express in common language.
What is a song you wish you had written yourself?
Sweet Dreams by Eurythmics
If there was any moment in your career you could relive, what would it be?
I'm really early in my career, so there aren't too many of these memories. I will say that working on music for this past album in Amsterdam, Berlin, and Barcelona, I would relive the times I had at the Berlin Techno night club Tresor, because I was able to gain a useful and new perspective on my music with a little help from Techno.
Which artist would you most love to share a stage with?
Pitbull
And is there an artist you would love to collaborate with as well?
Alan Walker
Where do you see yourself in five years time?
In 5 years, I see myself producing high quality music videos to go with my music, and also performing live with light shows.
