Having already established himself with a wealth of dazzling delights these last few years, fast-rising rapper Jaize is back on the grind once again to deliver his breezy new single 'nostalgia64'.
Lifted from his newly released EP 'ENDTAPE', which is out now, 'nostalgia64' makes for a wonderfully smooth and breezy listen. With his warm and progressive flow layered across a sweeping production throughout, he is certainly looking to turn some heads with this one.
So with the new track available to stream now, we sat down with him to discuss his origins and influences over the years.
What was the first band or artist you fell in love with?
The Strokes! I had little interest in going out of my way for music at the time(10-11 yrs) and “Reptila“ was something that was always stuck in my head after playing it on Guitar Hero. From that point on I was listening to everything they put out.
Did you ever form a band when you were younger and if so, what did they sound like?
Yes! When I was studying at UNT, I was in a hip-hop duo called Global Octopus. It was during this time that I first coined the name JAIZE. Our music was often likened to a blend of Outkast and A Tribe Called Quest, which continues to inspire my solo work today. Being part of GO showed me that music was not only a viable means of self-expression but also a way to support myself in the future.
What has been your primary inspiration in writing music?
My aim is to immerse listeners into the world I create with my music. I want each lyric to paint a picture in your mind, to transport you into the soundscape being crafted. After listening to the song, I hope you better understand me as a person, and as an artist. I see it as a sonic journal entry.
What is a song you wish you had written yourself?
Reprise- Cavalier.
If there was any moment in your career you could relive, what would it be?
As a member of Global Octopus, we got to share the stage with Asher Roth. He let us freestyle onstage with him and then we formed a soul train line. The energy was fantastic, had a great time.
Which artist would you most love to share a stage with?
Gotta go with Kendrick, this run he's on is legendary. Would love to have that energy on stage with me.
And is there an artist you would love to collaborate with as well?
Toro y Moi and/ or any OG Stonesthrow label members all crafted my sound.
Where do you see yourself in five years time?
By then, I am hoping to tour regularly and to have shifted to pursuing music full-time. I also wish to produce more original music and organize additional events in my local area.
