Following on from the huge hype he built up thanks to his debut EP 'Calculating The Ifs' last year, which was supported by both BBC Radio and GRM Daily, emerging rapper and poet J Carlyle returns in strong form with his latest single 'Intruder Alert'.
Bringing back more of that fresh and signature dancehall sound he is known, his latest banger was just so intoxicating, we had to know more. So we sat down with J to find out more about his latest release and what he has planned for the future.

For those that haven’t heard of you yet, how would you best describe your sound and who have been your biggest influences so far?
I would describe my sound as the type of music that you can drive and vibe to. Take in a message but also enjoy it. I would say my biggest influences have been Kendrick Lamar, Wretch 32, Drake, Chris Brown, and Vybz Kartel. And just music in general.
And which artist would you most like to share a stage with?
Kendrick Lamar.
You have just released your new single ‘Intruder Alert’. Can you tell us how that record came about? What is the story behind it?
Well one day I went to the studio and my producer had his icloud hacked. From there he started playing on the keys and the idea for the chorus just came to me. Then I coupled that with the storyline of other forms of intrusion that most people can relate to like people messaging you or sliding in your DMs. From there the rest is history.
And was there a particular style you were looking for when you wrote it?
When I’m making music I always go from the vibe of the melody or what I’m feeling that day. Was listening to a lot of dancehall at that point so thought that would fit best.
Can we expect a new EP or even album from you in the near future?
Most definitely. I’m just focusing on people getting to know me and my music for now but I want to put an EP together towards the end of the year.
The coronavirus outbreak has obviously affected everyone’s plans, but what else have you got in store for the year ahead?
My team and I are just coming up with different ideas on how we can create content for the fans that’s going to engage and entertain as I am unable to perform and interact on a face-to-face level. So just more music, more visuals, more everything
And finally, what advice do you have for others looking to break into the music scene?
Believe in yourself. Trust your talent. Take constructive criticism but don’t let anyone discourage you either. For me making music is expressing and representing who you are as an artist.
But people do music for different reasons. Understand your “why" i.e The reason why you are doing it and let that be the foundation and driving force towards your success.
