GET TO KNOW: Detox From Grey

After spending the last few years building and developing their distinctive direction, London-based outfit Detox From Grey return once again to offer up their dreamy new single 'Star In My Sky'.

Capturing more of that warm and woozy aesthetic they are known for, 'Star In My Sky' makes for a wonderfully inviting listen. With its sweet and alluring production matched against some beautifully passionate vocals throughout, they are continuing their rise as one of the more interesting names doing the rounds right now.

So with the new single available now, we sat down with them to find out more about their origins and influences over the years.

What was the first band or artist you fell in love with?

Marco: Totally obsessed with Nirvana. Great tunes.

Jiwoon: Me too, I was really into them in my teenage years and they inspired me to pick up the guitar.

Did you ever form a band when you were younger and if so, what did they sound like?

We’ve all been in many bands, Julie was in a pop/funk band called ‘Blue blink’ in Copenhagen when she was younger - which had an electronic happy pop sound and Jiwoon was part of ‘Swedish Death Candy’ - a psychedelic rock band. Marco played in various rock bands in Italy and was a lead singer in a blues band - he therefore sings a lot of nice harmonies for our live gigs.

What has been your primary inspiration in writing music?

Julie: I love reading poetry and going to museums in London. I get really inspired by modern poets like Kae Tempest and Rebecca Tantony, but also like walking into second hand stores searching for old poetry books. I normally start from the lyrics and then let the songs unfold themselves from there.

What is a song you wish you had written yourself?

Julie: It has to be the classic ‘Both Sides Now’ - Joni Mitchell - the lyrics are just so beautiful and the melody is carefully crafted so delicately around the lyrics or Kimbra’s song ‘Save Me’ - great lyrics and really interesting soundscape and vocal production.

If there was any moment in your career you could relive, what would it be?

Jiwoon: In my previous bands I’ve done a multiple tour across Europe including headlining, supporting shows and festivals. I’d love to do them again but with Detox.

Which artist would you most love to share a stage with?

Marco: Would be cool to share the stage with Weyes Blood. Really like her stuff.

And is there an artist you would love to collaborate with as well?

Julie: We’ve reached out to the Korean artist Chi Yoonhae that we are working on a new track with. I’ve been wanting to work with him for a while so I'm really excited about collaborating with him for an upcoming track.

Where do you see yourself in five years time?

We see ourselves playing more live and touring. We’ve been focusing the last year on writing new material and we miss gigging and playing live.
