Following on from a wealth of riveting releases these last few years, Spanish artist Denis Granan is back on the grind once again to deliver his hypnotic new single 'Surrender'.
Bringing back more of that broad and emotive aesthetic he is known for, 'Surrender' makes for a beautifully warm and endearing return for him. With its spellbinding production perfectly elevating his shimmering vocals throughout, he continues to shine as one of the more impactful names on the rise right now.
So with the new single available now, we sat down with him to find out more about his origins and influences over the years.
What was the first band or artist you fell in love with?
Hard to remember, but Linkin Park would be one of the first obsessions. I love the musicality and raw desperation in their music. Also, Chester (RIP), one of the best vocalists ever, inspired me (and still does) a lot.
Did you ever form a band when you were younger and if so, what did they sound like?
Sure, I did live the drama. I had two bands. I was the vocalist in both—the first one was Britpop, and the second was alternative rock (my references at that time for the band were Nothing But Thieves, Tool, Kings of Leon, Foals…).
What has been your primary inspiration in writing music?
I would call it a need. I get grumpy if I don’t compose for a while. It’s like doing exercise—even if you don’t feel like it, you’ll feel better after doing it. In my case, it’s similar. I like making music, of course, but it’s kind of a physiological need.
What is a song you wish you had written yourself?
There are many, but from the ones I’m listening to: “Artifice” by Sohn. Beautiful production, voice, and such a groovy song.
If there was any moment in your career you could relive, what would it be?
I’m always trying to travel to that place I go when a new song is finally coming together. It’s the same place a gamer goes when playing a good game, or a reader with a good book—another universe that becomes accessible to you, in your head.
Which artist would you most love to share a stage with?
There are many… Thom Yorke, Radiohead, Sohn, Moderat, Modeselektor, Chet Faker, O Mer (love the song “I’m Alive”), Fred Again, Finneas, Billie Eilish, London Grammar, etc. etc.
And is there an artist you would love to collaborate with as well?
Dreaming is free, so: Camo & Krooked, Fred Again, Moderat, Bicep.
Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?
I see myself writing songs, writing a book, enjoying life and discovering many countries and people while playing abroad—always returning home, with my dogs, my partner, and the nature around us.
